Waller Marine, Inc. announced the successful installation of its recently constructed floating power generation barges into a prepared basin at Tacoa, Venezuela. The two 171 MW barges, The Margarita I and the Josefa Rufina I, will become the world's largest floating power generation facility, each supporting a GE 7FA duel fuel industrial gas turbine, and will supply much needed power to Caracas.
Waller Marine is a world leader in the design and construction of power barges. In 2010, Waller Marine, Inc. was awarded the contract to construct what would become the largest floating power plant in the world. The project consisted of building two 300' x 100' barges, each equipped with GE 7FA turbines, that have a combined power generating capacity in excess of 340 MegaWatts of electricity. This was the first time that GE 7FA turbines were ever installed on a mobile platform. The barges were built at the Signal International yard in Orange, TX and were launched in 180 days. Waller Marine designed and managed the construction of the barges, along with the installation of the power plants on the barges, utilizing over 900 men working in shifts, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Floating cogeneration plants can easily be relocated and are, therefore, an ideal solution for power and water production on an interim basis, as they can be connected to the grid to alleviate local power and water shortages where and when needed. It can provide a rapid answer to increased power and water demand in advance of coming land based power plants. The challenge it poses is more on a regional than a continental scale. One factor relevant to operational mobility is the "rolling resistance" of a vehicle traveling on ordinary roads. On roads the rolling resistance of tracked vehicles equals four percent of their weight, on average, while that of their wheeled counterparts equals only 2 percent of their weight. Consequently, wheeled vehicles need less fuel and can cover longer distances by road before they need to be ref...
